Support the Veterans’ HEALTH Act

Our nation’s veterans deserve the care they were promised

I am writing to encourage you to do everything in your power to support, advance, and pass the Veterans’ HEALTH (Health Empowerment, Access, Leadership, and Transparency for our Heroes) Act (S.1315) and its companion bill, the Veteran Care Improvement Act (H.R. 3520).

Veterans’ access to community care—critical options for many veterans to get the care they need—is being undermined by the VA. The VA has cancelled millions of appointments, and has blamed the COVID-19 pandemic but conducts almost no outreach on community care eligibility and actively discourages veterans from seeking it.

This is an egregious affront to veterans and jeopardizes years of progress in providing for the care they have earned. We needn’t go back to the days of Phoenix and secret wait lists. We must protect the freedom and wellbeing community care offers.

By passing this legislation, Congress can ensure veterans continue to receive community care without the threat of administrative changes rolling back progress. Conversely, inaction on this critical issue will see the VA regress to a sluggish and bureaucratic system and threatens to keep veterans trapped in a broken system.

Our nation’s veterans deserve the care they were promised. I urge you to support and vote for the Veterans' HEALTH Act and Veteran Care Improvement Act so they can get it.

For many veterans, being able to use their VA benefits at facilities close to home, right in their own communities is vital. It empowers them with options and freedom to make the best decisions for their unique situations.

The Veterans Community Care Program expanded health care choices for millions of veterans, but poor VA implementation has made access to quality care increasingly difficult. The VA has cancelled millions of appointments, and has blamed the COVID-19 pandemic but conducts almost no outreach on community care eligibility and actively discourages veterans from seeking it.

The Veterans’ HEALTH Act and the Veteran Care Improvement Act will carry out the intent of the bipartisan VA MISSION Act by protecting community care treatment options and making them easier for veterans to use.
